Collagen is the most present protein in the human body and accounts for 80% of all proteins present in the body. It is everywhere: in the bones, in the teeth, in the muscles, in the hair, in the nails. It is also the main protein in the skin.

The word collagen derives from the Greek word “kolla” (glue), to highlight its role as a binder. Collagen is the body’s natural glue, which binds and supports the body’s tissues and internal organs.

The body is able to produce collagen itself, but from the age of 25 the production begins to decrease and the skin begins to lose 1% of collagen every year. As a result, the skin ages, wrinkles appear, hair loses its brightness, becomes thinner and thinner, and nails become brittle. Collagen loss can also be accelerated by external factors such as pollution, smoking, diet and overexposure to the sun. UV rays stimulate enzymes that break down collagen.

There is evidence that collagen loss can be recovered, or at least slowed down, by following a healthy diet (especially by consuming less sugar), avoiding harmful factors and avoiding overexposure to the sun. In addition, adequate collagen treatment is important, as it protects the skin’s collagen and at the same time stimulates its formation.

Based on absorption, we distinguish natural collagen from hydrolyzed collagen. It occurs naturally in the skin, joints and bones of animals and can be introduced for example by consuming beef broth and gelatin. However, since the collagen in these foods is found in very small quantities and has a longer composition (composed of several amino acids and closely linked in a long protein chain), it is difficult for the body to absorb. Hydrolyzed collagen is broken down into smaller particles (peptides) by an enzymatic process, so it is absorbed by the body 5 times faster than natural collagen.

There are 28 types of collagen, types I, II and III make up the majority (80-90% of collagen):

  • Type I is the most present in the body and is very important for the health of skin, hair and nails. It is mainly collagen of marine origin.
  • Type II is important for joint and digestive health and is present in the joints, bones and tissues of the intestine. It often originates from poultry.
  • Type III is the second most present and is found in blood vessels, intestines, muscles and uterus. It is most often of bovine origin.
